'Scream VI' Is Expected To Set A New Box Office Record

Exclusive: Scream VI, from Paramount and Spyglass Media, debuted today with what appears to be a franchise high of $37M domestically. Scream 3 from 2000 had the previous highest opening for a Scream film, grossing $34.7M domestically.

There are other elements raising the temperature, not the least of which is Jenna Ortega's star power on Wednesday. Clearly. Fans were also happy with the previous film, which with a $30M 3-day opening last year and a final domestic gross of $81.6M, $140M WW, further underlined the power of horror at the box office during the epidemic.

Scream VI, which debuts on March 10 and follows the Ghostface killings from Woodsboro to New York City, is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet and produced by William Sherak, Paul Neinstein, and Vanderbilt at Project X Productions. The screenplay was written by Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt. Together with Hayden Panettiere, Courteney Cox, and Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Mason Gooding, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra, and Samara Weaving appear in Scream VI.

Similar to last year's Scream, which attracted 67% of that group, Scream VI's target audience is the 18-34 demographic. Scream draws 33% Latino and Hispanic viewers, 11% Black viewers, and 5% Asian viewers, making the sequel a highly diverse film. The ageing Gen X generation, specifically the 45–54 age group who are the franchise's steadfast admirers, is also becoming visible on monitoring. The previous installment had a 53% male bias.

The Scream series features five films, with the first one from 1996 earning $173M WW, and has a total worldwide gross of approximately $744M.

The international premiere of Paramount's Dungeons & Dragons: The Last Crusade takes place on opening day of Scream VI. The company has Top Gun: Maverick scheduled for the Oscars that weekend with six nominations, including Best Picture, and Honor Among Thieves at SXSW.
